Gene Gort – Still Lifes + Silent Movies (2007/8)
I am interested in how these two genres
traditionally concern themselves with what
is not readily at hand. In the case of the still
life, compositions display technical virtuosity
as extreme realism in the service of symbol
or allegory – that which is inferred or encoded,
outside the frame, not literal. Silent movies
employ exaggerated gesture, stunt, and
melodrama to compensate for what is absent;
sound, dialogue or color- in short, realism.
